There are certain things you can do to minimize this- bonding treatments like Olaplex, spreading the process over a few weeks, using coconut oil and deep conditioners, avoiding heat styling-but in the end you have to be prepared to accept irrevocably less-healthy hair. One of the best arguments against bleach is the fact that it will damage the hell out of your hair. Here are my top reasons for my personal “pixie before platinum” rule: I've lived it, and having a short cut has made it so much easier to maintain my pale strands. I’d like to propose an additional suggestion: Have short hair. There are certain guidelines that you're supposed to follow before going blond-always show up at the salon with unwashed hair, have virgin hair or at least hair that doesn’t currently have dye in it. I don’t want to tell anyone what to do, but I firmly believe that anyone who goes from brunette to blond with hair any longer than an above-the-shoulder bob is crazy. I loved being blond so much, I even taught myself how to bleach and tone my own hair at home so that I could get my fix whenever I wanted.īut here's the thing: If I hadn’t cut my hair short first, I probably never would have went blond. Next, I went to a salon (breathe-it wasn't the Orange Tiger Streak Salon) and ponied up a good chunk of change to have them take my naturally brown hair platinum blond. First, I chopped it all off into a pixie cut. And yet, I don’t regret two of the most drastic changes that I've ever made to my hair.
